On sale Where We Belong

Product Description

The author of five blockbuster novels, Emily Giffin, delivers an unforgettable story of two women, the families that make them who they are, and the longing, loyalty and love that binds them together

Marian Caldwell is a thirty-six year old television producer, living her dream in New York City. With a fulfilling career and satisfying relationship, she has convinced everyone, including herself, that her life is just as she wants it to be. But one night, Marian answers a knock on the door . . . only to find Kirby Rose, an eighteen-year-old girl with a key to a past that Marian thought she had sealed off forever. From the moment Kirby appears on her doorstep, Marian’s perfectly constructed world—and her very identity—will be shaken to its core, resurrecting ghosts and memories of a passionate young love affair that threaten everything that has come to define her.

For the precocious and determined Kirby, the encounter will spur a process of discovery that ushers her across the threshold of adulthood, forcing her to re-evaluate her family and future in a wise and bittersweet light. As the two women embark on a journey to find the one thing missing in their lives, each will come to recognize that where we belong is often where we least expect to find ourselves—a place that we may have willed ourselves to forget, but that the heart remembers forever.

Marian Caldwell appears to have the perfect life. She is a successful producer of a hot TV show, she has a rich successful boyfriend and a fast-paced lifestyle in the Big Apple. But everything is not always as it seems....and a knock on the door of her Manhattan penthouse one evening reminds Marian of exactly that.
Kirby Rose has never felt as though she fit in with her family...and the knowledge that she was adopted, though never a secret, seems to be rearing it's head more often as of late. A conversation overheard between her parents is the final straw; Kirby sets off on her own to meet her birth mother, and changes the lives of everyone....

Where We Belong is a story about the choices we make, and the reasons we make them. An 18-year-old Marian made choices many years ago....to create a life that she thought that she wanted. Kirby's timely visit helps her to see that sometimes what we think we want may not be what makes us the happiest....

    5.0 out of 5 stars Would Love a Sequel!, August 22, 2012

I absolutely loved Where We Belong. As someone who has read all of Emily Giffin's books, I can say this is one of her best. I think the characters in this particular novel were beautifully written. I would actually recommend you read Something Borrowed to begin, as that is Giffin's first novel. (I am the type of person who likes to start with an author's earliest work.) Giffin will often weave minor (sometimes major) characters into her other books which I think is quite a treat for the reader, and another reason to begin with her earliest book.

I have to take a moment to say that people who are complaining about the ending of this novel - quit complaining. She clearly set it up so that she has the option of doing a sequel. People should be happy she didn't just tie everything into a neat little package. Real life is never a neat little package. She has delivered beautiful and neatly packaged endings in her other novels so I think it is refreshing she is mixing it up a bit... Read more

I have read all of Emily Giffin's books and I have yet to be disappointed. This new one was as good as all of her other's. I loved how she made her characters so real with strengths and flaws. Marian is a character that could have been so self centered and shallow but she is none of those things. Kirby is a true teenager with insecurities - underestimating her true worth and feeling very misunderstood. They were both so real to me. I loved the story - even the ending that left you wondering. Thanks for another great book, Emily!
