It was a dark and stormy night... It really was when Katrina Burton stopped to pick up the hitchhiker. He was barely more than a kid and soaked to the bone. How could she just leave him by the side of the road? But that was before he was in her car. He was older than she first thought, and less grateful and polite than drunken and surly. And looking at her in a way she didn't like at all. Kat started to feel real uncomfortable, real fast. And she wanted him out of her car. While it was true that she was going as far as Leavenworth, Washington, when the earlier exit for Lake Wenatchee arrived, she told this threatening man that's where she was going and ultimately had to force him out of the car. It was an ugly scene, but, hey, no big deal; she was never going to see the creep again. Right?

Cut to Monday morning. Kat has arrived for her first day teaching at a new high school. Imagine her surprise when she discovers her surly acquaintance is also a teacher on... Read more

Things are not always as they seem. People may not be who we think they are.

A young woman, Katrina, driving through the pouring rain, high in the mountains of Washington state, is on her way to a new teaching job. She unwisely picks up a hitchhiker, who turns out to be someone she wishes she'd never met. She gets herself enmeshed in a little white lie that leads to complications. To say the least.
Then things get even more interesting. She casually meets another young man in the hardware store in the new town she's moved to. There's an instant attraction. He seems to be the perfect man. But is he?
Things start to heat up. There's a murder. Katrina finds herself sinking deeper and deeper in a quagmire of lies. Not all of them of her own making.
The author really pours on the suspense. In fact, the whole book is one long suspense-filled roller coaster ride! Katrina gets so entangled in her web of lies, who can guess how Bates will get her untangled? He keeps... Read more

White Lies is about the little lies that can destroy our lives when we are unwilling to tell the truth to impress others. Katrina Burton is starting a new job teaching English in the small town of Leavenworth, Washington. As she is driving into town she comes across a hitchhiker and decides to be a Good Samaritan. She soon finds out that sometimes being nice isn't always good. Katrina decides to throw the hitchhiker out of her car but does it with a little white lie which comes to haunt her the next day and throughout the rest of the book.

Jeremy Bates writes with wonderful imagery and gives the reader the feeling of actually sitting in the car, walking the streets of Leavenworth, and watching the horrors unfold all due to Katrina's one little white lie.

As I read White Lies, I found myself taking issue with the way the author wrote Katrina as well as the male characters. You have Katrina, a confused 32 year old who is trying to save face with the people she... Read more
